WEB EXCLUSIVE: Biopolymer manufacturer Meredian, Inc., Bainbridge, Ga., recently started up what is believed to the world’s largest production facility for PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoate). At full production, the plant is capable of annual output of about 600 million lb. Following startup of this initial commercial production, Meredian plans to continue to expand output in an effort to keep pace with global customer demand. The use of bioplastics in packaging alone, is projected to increase at an annual rate of over 15% over the next two decades.

Meredian is producing PHA resins using technology it acquired from Procter & Gamble in 2007. Its bacterial fermentation process utilizes renewable plant-derived oils to create PHA. “We have spent the last three years confirming production systems and efficiencies while jointly developing specific end-use applications with our strategic customer partners. Meredian PHA provides value to our customers by way of its many attributes and performance capabilities. Additionally, we can compete with traditional petro-based plastics on price, based upon our cost-effective production systems,” says Blake Lindsey, president and co-founder.

Meredian PHA is certified by leading third party firms for meeting strict ASTM biodegradation requirements, including marine water conditions. Meredian also expects to receive food-contact approval and compost certification for its PHA.
