Axium Packaging to Expand to North Carolina
The rigid plastics packaging maker with injection and blow molding capabilities is investing $32 million in a 150,000-ft2 facility in Archdale, its first in the state and 19th in North America.
Axium Packaging (New Albany, Ohio) is investing $32 million in a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Archdale, N.C. The injection molder and blowmolder of rigid plastics packaging will build 150,000-ft2 facility that will create 118 jobs in Randolph County over the next three years, according to a press release from the office of North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper.
Headquartered in Ohio, Axium manufactures packaging for personal care, household chemical, over-the-counter pharmaceutical and food markets. Since 2011, it has grown to 3000 employees across 18 facilities. Archdale will be its first North Carolina site and 19th plant in North America when it begins operations in 2024.
The One North Carolina Fund provided a performance-based grant of $365,000 to aid Axium’s location to North Carolina. The governor’s office said the fund provides financial assistance to local governments to attract economic investment, with targeted companies receiving no money upfront. They must meet job creation and capital investment targets to qualify for payment.
Axium’s plastics processing capabilities include injection molding, extrusion blow molding (EBM; mono to six layer), single-stage injection stretch blow molding (ISBM), and injection blow molding (IBM).
Within injection molding, core applications include flip-top caps, screw-top closures, multipiece assembled closures and injection molded tubes for the personal care, pharmaceutical and household chemical markets. In EBM, containers from ½ to 240 oz. are produced with the ability to incorporate post-consumer resin and create barrier packages. In ISBM, containers range in size from 5 ml to 2 l in PET, copolyester and PP, as well as PCR. For IBM, containers range in size from 2 ml to 2 l, using HDPE, LDPE, LLDPE, PP and PS.
The company’s expansion across North America is part of its sustainability plan to provide “state-of-the-art facilities built to be environmentally friendly along with near-site locations in close proximity to our customers fill locations.” This serves its goal to “reduce the miles from manufacture to fill,” which will minimize transportation lead-time and ultimately reduce its carbon footprint.
