Chihiro Kanagawa, a figure in the global chemical industry, left a mark as a defender of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and a steward of sustainable growth.
A graduate of the University of Tokyo, Kanagawa’s career began with an international trading company before joining Shin-Etsu Chemical in 1962. Recognizing PVC’s potential, he spearheaded the establishment of Shintech, Inc. in 1973, envisioning a future where PVC would not only excel as a material but also contribute to environmental preservation.
Under his leadership, Shintech flourished, evolving into the world's largest PVC manufacturer with a production capacity 32 times larger than its inception. His mantra of “full production, full sales” and emphasis on a lean organizational structure propelled Shintech's growth trajectory, representing 36% of North America's PVC production.
Transitioning to president of Shin-Etsu Chemical in 1990, Kanagawa's visionary strategies mirrored those implemented at Shintech, propelling Shin-Etsu Chemical into a global powerhouse through strategic expansions and innovations. His commitment to safety and environmental stewardship was paramount, evidenced by pioneering emission-reducing processes and advocacy for sustainability within the industry.
Kanagawa has authored several books and delivered numerous presentations on management, garnering recognition for his leadership. His dedication to the PVC industry earned him the distinction of honorary citizenship in states pivotal to Shintech's operations, including Texas, Washington and Louisiana.
As chairman of the Vinyl Environmental Council of Japan, Kanagawa championed sustainable practices and disseminated scientific knowledge, leaving an enduring legacy of environmental stewardship and innovation.
