Make Thinner Stretch-Hood Films at Lower Cost

WEB EXCLUSIVE: A new, more sustainable stretch-hood solution developed by the Belgian polymer plant of Houston-based ExxonMobil Chemical Co. is now being expanded by the company to the resin packaging operations of all of its polymer plants, and can easily be extended to other stretch-hood applications, the company says. The key to the new stretch film was the addition of the company’s Vistamaxx PBE, a metallocene catalyzed propylene-ethylene specialty TPE. It reportedly delivers new levels of performance, processing efficiencies, and lower formulation costs for flexible films while enhancing targeted properties such as elasticity, flexibility, adhesion, sealability, cling, toughness, and clarity.
 
The new three-layer film structure is comprised of 100% Exceed mLLDPE resin in the outer layers and a blend of 15% Vistamaxx and 85% Nexxstar EVA in the core. This replaced the previous two-layer film structure of 100% Exceed mPE on the outside and 100% Nexxstar EVA on the inside. Addition of Vistamaxx provides good opportunities to downgauge stretch-hood films. The new film not only keeps 25 kg sacks of polymer pellets secure and stable on the pallet, but it meets the company’s stretch-ratio target of 55% and is downgauged from 100 microns to 90 microns, which translates into a 16% raw material savings.
