Energy Consumption in Manufacturing: New Data Standard in Development
Industry 4.0 data-communication standards will gain a protocol for sharing information on energy use in production.

An international consortium including the OPC Foundation, developer of Industry 4.0 data-interchange protocols based on the OPC UA interface standard, is working to “harmonize and standardize energy consumption information on the shop floor.” The eventual results of the Power Consumption Management working group, created in May, will be published as an OPC UA specification to ensure that “energy information from all machines and components on the shop floor can be provided in a standardized way as part of the Global Production Language,” according to a statement from the group. Such a standard is seen by the group as essential to achieving international goals for “climate-neutral production.” Other members of the working group are VDMA, the German machinery trade organization; ODVA, an international standards and trade organization of automation suppliers; and PI (Profibus and Profinet International), also an automation trade group.
