TriMas Building Greenfield Molding Site in Ohio
Rieke, part of the company’s packaging group, is currently building a 230,000-ft2 facility in New Albany that is expected to begin production in the second quarter of 2022.
TriMas (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) announced that Rieke, part of its TriMas Packaging group, is building a new 230,000-ft2 facility in New Albany, Ohio, with plans to invest roughly $20 million over several years, and production expected to begin in the second quarter of 2022.
The new, highly automated plant will be located near Rieke’s current New Albany manufacturing facility, which will ultimately be relocated into the larger facility upon completion. In a release, TriMas said Rieke will be installing some of the “most advanced injection molding and assembly capabilities available,” boosting the plant’s efficiency and reducing energy consumption. A spokesperson told Plastics Technology those efficiencies will be incorporated into the design of the plant. “The new facility allows us to design the most efficient manufacturing process by utilizing state-of-the-art automated equipment in connection with a lean work flow setup.” The spokesperson told Plastics Technology that, initially, the plan is to start with 10 new injection molding machines ranging in size from 275 to 500 tons.
Products to be made in New Albany, in an area referred to as the Beauty Park of Ohio, will include foaming and traditional soap dispensers, among other items, supporting customers predominantly in the beauty and personal care end markets. TriMas said the new New Albany facility will enable the company to reshore the production of a variety of products that are currently molded overseas.
TriMas—which is comprised of packaging, aerospace and specialty product business units—reported net sales of $770 million in 2020, an increase of 6.4%, driven by record sales in TriMas’ Packaging group and acquisitions. Packaging accounted for 63% of the company’s net sales in 2020. TriMas’ packaging segment consists of the Rieke, Affaba & Ferrari, Taplast and Rapak brands. Rapak and Affaba & Ferrari were acquired in 2020.
