‘Game-Changing’ Heat and Light Stabilizer for Agricultural PE Films
BASF’s NOR 211 AR promotes sustainability through reduced polymer usage in the so-called plasticulture — plastics used in agriculture — market.
What is touted as a ‘game-changing’ heat and light stabilizer for PE agricultural films has been launched by BASF. Tinuvin NOR 211 AR, an advanced HALS (hindered amine light stabilizer), supports film producers and converters in the plasticulture — plastics used in agricultural — market. Specifically, this stabilizer targets agricultural plastics exposed to UV radiation and thermal stress, and those that require resistance to high levels of inorganic chemicals such as sulfur and chlorine used in crop management and disinfection. This is the latest addition to BASF’s Valeras additives portfolio.
Advancements in plasticulture, heavily dominated by PE, have led to a growing trend in downgauging films, while maintaining their performance, and is made possible via new grades that enhance the mechanical properties of PE films. At the same time, converters are investing in new equipment to increase the number of layers in their films to improve performance and durability. This transition to thinner and more durable films is crucial for the sustainability of agricultural plastics as it helps to reduce plastic waste, enhance production efficiency and facilitate recycling and upcycling. According to BASF, Tinuvin NOR 211 AR is ideal when downgauging, even in intensive horticulture, regardless of the application region’s severity of UV radiation, heat and chemicals that are present.
Bettina Sobotka, head of global marketing and development for BASF’s plastic additives, says that the Tinuvin NOR 211 AR additive “addresses a broad variety of challenges for agricultural plastics.” Specifically, she says that BASF’s NOR HALS products improve stabilization by moving beyond additives based on secondary and methylated HALS.
