Software Simulation for Twin Screws

Software simulates the steady-state flow in modular self-wiping intermeshing co-rotating twin-screw extruders

TSE-SIM is a new CAE tool from Compuplast that has been developed to simulate the steady-state flow in modular self-wiping intermeshing co-rotating twin-screw extruders. It has been developed to work through a browser so that it can be used with a PC, tablet or mobile mhone browser for ease, maximum versatility and avoiding the need for installation or updates.

The simulation is based on a composite flow model extending previous work of H. Potente at the University of Paderborn, Germany. This model covers elasticating, non-¬isothermal extrusion of a power-law material, with extensions to include leakage flows over the screw flight tips in fully filled zones and the contribution of the radial flight clearance to total channel depth.

Taking as inputs the extruder geometry and screw configuration, material rheological and thermodynamic properties, and operating conditions of the extruder, it computes profiles of solid volume fraction, degree-of-fill, average pressure and melt temperature along the extruder axis.

Compuplast will be discussing this technology at the Extrusion 2021 Conference, Sept. 21-23 in Rosemont, Ill.
