Meredian’s PHA Ready for Commercial Production
The firm has 60 million lb of capacity ready for use.
After successful completion of pilot production, Meredian Inc., Bainbridge, Ga., says it is ready for commercial-scale production of its PHA bioplastic, noting that 60 million lb of capacity is available now. The material is said to be distinguished by its flexibility, resembling LLDPE and suiting it to production of film, fibers, and bottles. It is produced by bacterial fermentation of canola oil, though other plant oils or starches could be used as feedstocks. It is expected to be cost-competitive with HDPE and PP when produced in commercial volumes.
