Quantum Storage Systems/M&M Plastics Updates Machine Fleet
The Miami, Fl. based injection molder has ordered 11 new injection molding machines from LS Mtron.
As part of a focus on capacity growth, injection molder Quantum Storage Systems/M&M Plastics (Miami, Fl.) has committed to updating its machine fleet, and after a review of multiple major injection molding machine brands, the company ordered 11 new presses from LS Mtron over the last two years.
With 58 injection molding machines, capacity for more than 200 million parts annually and 1.3 million ft2 of space spread amongst five manufacturing facilities, Quantum/M&M has more than 150,000 ft2 of manufacturing floor space where it produces in house its extensive proprietary product lines as well as custom molded products for a wide range of markets.
Don Thomas, Quantum’s general manager, said that of the 11 purchased machines five are up and running, with two currently being commissioned, and the remaining four new large machines being delivered by the end of this year into next. Quantum sought to optimize the use of its floor space, maximizing the press size and tonnage, by seeking efficient machinery with a small footprint. The company noted in a release that the LS Mtron machines are significantly more compact and efficient than the older machines they’re replacing.
In addition to compact size, Quantum was drawn in part to LS Mtron due to short lead times with availability in 100 days or less. Those fast deliveries have helped Quantum support its strong, recent growth. When Thomas joined Quantum in 2011, the company had less than 200 employees, while today it has more than 400.
In addition to doing all its own molding in-house, Quantum tackles a lot of its own mold making, especially for smaller parts produced under its M&M Plastics division. The company has more than 24,000 products and molds and continues to design and create new products.
