A Japanese maker of injection molding presses has started a material compounding service to provide a range of thermoplastics enhanced with carbon nanotubes. The Voltiga CNT materials and compounding service were announced at the recent Chinaplas show in Shanghai by Nissei Plastic Industrial Co. Ltd., of Japan (Nissei America Inc. is in Anaheim, Calif.). Nissei typically compounds 5% to 10% of CNT with a range of thermoplastics to provide conductivity, lubricity, and/or high strength. Nissei has been researching the process since 2001 and will officially commercialize it in September. Nissei has developed seven Voltiga CNT compounds and plans to compound up to 220,000 lb/yr to start. Nissei will work with any resin and has tested PP, acetal, PC, nylon 6, nylon 12, PPA, LCP, ABS, PPE, and PET. At Chinaplas, Nissei showed a Voltiga PC antistatic chip-carrier tray.
