WEB EXCLUSIVE: PET Packaging specialist Plastic Technologies, Inc. (PTI) has launched a free app that calculates the intrinsic viscosity (IV) of blends of virgin and recycled PET. The PET Blend Calculator is available on the Apple iPhone and iPad as well as Android platforms. Virgin and recycled PET have different IVs, and as the use of recycled PET grows, so does the need for a quick way to calculate a blend’s IV.
The first screen of this new app asks the user to plug in the volume percentage and IV for the virgin and for the recycled resin. Tapping the screen’s “submit” button produces a display of the blend’s IV and the molecular weights of each resin ingredient and the final blend. Next, the user is prompted to a second screen, a PET Hydrolytic Degradation Nomograph, to input moisture content in percent or ppm. The blend IV number from the previous screen is carried over to the new screen and plotted against the moisture information to obtain final IV results. This device is intended to reduce the chance of making under-performing PET preforms, bottles, or thermoformed products. The new app can be found in the iTunes App Store or the Android Market by searching for “PET Blend Calculator.”
Trajectory is generally flat-to-down for all commodity resins.

Starting on Thursday August 8, 2024, PT will begin “gating” its premium content, asking all new website users to provide some information about themselves — name, title, employer, email address — before they are provided free access to the content.

With this audience development strategy, we hope to do two things:
First, we will be better able to deliver directly to our audience the editorial content that aligns with plastics materials, processes and technologies that interest them.
Second, we will be better able to connect the materials, equipment and services our advertisers supply with the audience that is most interested in them.
PT plays a distinctive role and has earned a place of esteem within the focused and specialized industry it serves. Large developments in the media landscape are forcing us to change the way we communicate with our audience. We are confident that our audience values the role PT plays in their professional lives and will join us in this effort to stay connected to them.
